Since ancient times condiments such as salt and vinegar were used to enhance the flavour of food. Mustard was popular in the Middle Ages, and after a Mrs Clements of Durham in 1720 made a smooth mustard powder, Durham soon became the centre of the UK’s mustard industry. Now, condiments cover everything from tomato sauce, mint sauce and Worcester sauce to mayonnaise, pesto and soy sauce.

The countryside surrounding London boasts some wonderful fruit and vegetables used in the making of condiments with artisan brands blending unusual flavours such as Coronation Chutney, Blue Cheese Mayonnaise and Beetroot and Horseradish Sauce designed to enliven any meal hot or cold.
