The cosmopolitan south London suburb of Brixton has overcome a difficult reputation to become one of the most exciting of the capital’s areas thanks to the ethnic diversity of its population, which has generated a colourful mix of shops, cafés, restaurants, clubs and markets.
Brixton Market – a collection of markets under one banner – dates back from the 1870s and is one of Europe’s largest Afro-Caribbean food markets, while Brixton Art Gallery champions urban art and culture, and small and large music venues include Carling Brixton Academy, The Fridge and Mass.
Fresh food is also available every Sunday at Brixton Farmers’ Market on Brixton Station Road where fruit and vegetables are supplied by farms in Kent, Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire. These can be found alongside bread, flowers, juice, cheese, chutneys and preserves that serve a growing community interested in the provenance of their food.
