The Surrey Copper Distillery

 

An independent craft distillery in Surrey, The Surrey Copper Distillery produces a distinctive library of spirits inspired by history and reflecting the essence of England.

Based near Cranleigh, the family-owned distillery was founded in 2017 by Chris Smart, who has a PhD in biochemistry and is a qualified distiller, and Katherine Smart, who has a PhD in brewing and a DSc in brewing and distilling.

The Surrey Copper Distillery's name is inspired by local Surrey folklore. During the 1830s a policeman from Godalming put a stop to a sheep-stealing ring who, legend has it, plotted and planned their crimes in the White Horse Inn in Shere, which is close to the Smart’s family home.

All of The Surrey Copper Distillery’s products are developed in Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee (2L copper pot stills), scaled up in Alice (a 20L small-batch still) and produced in Clara (a 300L carterhead solid copper). This process helps to produce very smooth and delicate spirits.

Their bottles and label designs are embellished with stunning illustrations of interwoven botanicals and are reminiscent of antique book covers.

Their flagship product, which was released in June 2018, Copperfield London Dry Gin is distilled and bottled at The Surrey Copper Distillery in Cranleigh.

Its blend of botanicals is inspired by historical recipes discovered in library archives and includes juniper berries, orris root, angelica, liquorice, coriander, caraway, lemon peel, cardamom, cubeb berries and elderflower.

Chris and Katherine are avid collectors of rare and old books, and the Copperfield name is inspired by Dickens’ classic novel.

Chimes English Extra Dry Vermouth, meanwhile, uses carefully selected English wine blended with a gently distilled spirit vapour infusion made from twelve botanicals.

First released in October 2018, it is named after Charles Dickens’ The Chimes: A Goblin Story of Some Bells that Rang an Old Year Out and a New Year In. Further ‘editions’ are planned in due course.

As well as being available from their online shop and John Lewis, The Surrey Copper Distillery’s spirits can be bought at Kingfisher Farm Shop, Taurus Wines and Surrey Hills Beer & Gin Company, among others, in Surrey.

The gin market in Surrey and the UK is booming and it's always exciting to see how new distilleries set about differentiating themselves from the crowd. The Surrey Copper Distillery is an extremely classy offering building on the inspiration and creative heritage of British literature. 

Towards the end of 2018, Professor Katherine Smart was appointed as the new Chair of the Worshipful Company of Brewers’ Livery Committee and was also the first woman to be elected to the Court of the Brewers’ Company in its history. We can’t wait to see what the next chapter holds for this high-flying Surrey distillery.
