Local Food Sussex - Billy's On The Road on the A29 near Billingshurst serves freshly-prepared breakfast, brunch and lunch dishes and is available for private hire for parties too
Found just outside Billingshurst on the A29, Billy's On The Road is a roadside diner with a difference. Though chef-proprietor Billy is well-known by passing tradespeople for her top-notch breakfasts, her café also draws a loyal crowd of families and local residents who return time and again for the freshly-prepared breakfast, brunch and lunch menus.
Billy's is 'big on breakfast', so you'll be spoilt for choice with everything from continental croissants to American-style pancakes and waffles and of course the classic Billy's Big Breakfast available all day, every day. There's also a noteworthy selection of unexpected dishes, such as Mexican Huevos Rancheros, grilled kippers and Swiss and Italian-style breakfasts. A regular favourite is the Cowboy Breakfast of 3oz sirloin steak, 2 fried eggs and chips.
With more than 30 years' experience at restaurants all over the world, Billy knows that good food is what keeps customers coming back. She sources many of her ingredients locally, including meat from award-winning butcher John Murray who is based just up the road at Loxwood. Ice cream comes from Caroline's Dairy near Chichester, and vegetables, eggs and tomatoes are all supplied by local farms. The coffee is pretty special too: it's Billy's own bespoke blend which is roasted just for the café.
Weekend breakfasts are a family affair, and kids are catered for with their own special menu that will make the grown-ups envious. The hilariously-named dishes include Fartypants (beans with melted cheese soldiers), Dinner's In The Dog (sausages in a finger roll with optional onions) and the favourite dessert, Double Doggy Doo Delight (chocolate and vanilla ice creams with chocolate sauce and chocolate drops). Billy will even make up special dishes on request - see Grumpy Chops and Party Pants on the menu. While they're waiting for their food (or while mum and dad are reading the paper after breakfast), the kids can play with the custom-built doll's house and model railway table.
