A rural business in East Sussex which has developed a farm school and mobile farm has won a prestigious Countryside Alliance Award for Rural Enterprise.
South Brockwells Farm at Little Horsted near Uckfield has been enthusiastically serving the community for more than 45 years.
Sarah Robinson, who runs the family business with her sister Chrissy Wells and Chrissy’s husband, Arron - ably assisted by Chrissie and Arron's young daughters, Lucy and Daisy - told us that the win means the world to them.
"All the team here work so hard and with such passion and this award recognises that. We're constantly developing ideas and innovating in order to not just survive, but to thrive, as a small, independent farm. To have that work recognised makes us really proud."
A farm with a difference, South Brockwells was established in 1976: they are experts in sheep and asparagus farming and welcome visitors to their small shop and butchery. However, as many rural businesses have found, diversification is key, and this is something that the team has embraced with vigour. So the farm now includes South Brockwells Farm School and mobile farm, allowing the team to share their farming expertise.
"We work with children and young people from across Sussex to support their education and wellbeing," explains their director of education and events, Caroline Tasker. "It's all about teaching them about the role farming plays in their lives and where food comes from.
"As we continue to battle the challenges, we are looking out for opportunities to work with local businesses and community groups who are as passionate as us. This will help us improve our site so we can continue to meet the demand in our local area and work with as many children and young people from all backgrounds as possible!
"We'd love to hear from people who feel this sounds like a project they would like to be involved in."
