Based in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea in west London, Notting Hill is an upmarket area known best for its Portobello Road Market and for the annual Notting Hill Carnival. It was largely rural until the 1820s when attractive terraces and large Victorian houses were built, and has since developed into a desirable area with top end restaurants and boutiques.

Tourists feel like they already know the area well thanks to the 1999 Richard Curtis film Notting Hill starring Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts, which has since made Notting Hill one of the top 10 movie locations in London.

The Portobello Market’s main market days are Fridays and Saturdays when antiques and clothing jostle for space along almost a kilometre of road, while Notting Hill Farmers’ Market takes place every Saturday in the car park behind Waterstone’s on Kensington Church Street. Established in 1999, it includes dairy products from Guernsey, fresh fruit and veg and fish from Essex.
