English wine now has a reputation as producing some of Europe’s best premium wine. With approximately 400 English vineyards producing around two million bottles per year, it is no wonder English wine is winning awards for its unique taste and quality.

It is generally agreed that the Romans introduced the wine to England, but its popularity wavered through the Middle Ages. The current popularity stems from a revival for English wine in the 1950s following the planting of a vineyard in Hambledon in Hampshire.

Thanks to much modernisation, the English wine industry is now competitive on the world market thanks to its whites, which tend to have floral bouquets, its reds, which are good with light meats and game, and its sparkling wines, which often beat the best of French Champagnes in competitions.
