London is home to many breweries, the oldest of which is surprisingly St Paul’s Cathedral which, by the end of the thirteenth century, was producing almost 70,000 gallons of beer. By 1342 beer production had moved on from religious establishments as the Brewer’s Guild was founded and by the 1380s London had nearly 300 commercial breweries.

In 2007 London was reduced to only 10 breweries, the lowest number since World War II. However, new names such as Kernel have come onto the scene to join long established Fuller’s in Chiswick and, alongside a number of micro breweries, are once again putting London on the map as a beer destination offering some great ale, bitter and stout labels.
