Local Food Britain: the guide to food, drink and places to eat in your local area

Based in Surrey but reaching across the South East of England, Local Food Britain is on a mission to encourage vibrant local communities through fantastic food and drink.

Our website celebrates the farmers, growers, makers, restaurateurs, chefs, publicans and more who make the world a much more interesting (and tasty!) place by bringing us delicious regional and seasonal food and drink.

We hope you enjoy your foodie adventures and encourage you to share your favourite places with us on social media.

The story of Local Food Britain

Founded by Tracy Carroll, the idea of Local Food Britain first began to take shape in 2011.

We first launched to the public as Local Food Surrey in May 2012 but soon realised that there was an appetite for a local food-finding website and support network beyond Surrey's borders.

In April 2014, Local Food Surrey officially became Local Food Britain with an event at Bookham Harrison Farms in Rudgwick.

This featured a select group of independent food producers from Sussex to complement our existing Surrey members.

Local Food Britain has since added independent food and drink businesses in Kent, Hampshire, Dorset, Essex and London to its foodie family, and continues to grow.

The importance of buying British food

Shopping for food locally helps independent British businesses to grow and the communities where we live to thrive, so Local Food Britain makes it simple to find food shops, restaurants and farmers' markets near you.

Whether you're searching for organic vegetables, local honey or sustainable fish, we can help you find it with our local food search tool - and you get the reassurance that by buying from our members you're keeping food miles low and giving vital support to the local food economy.

Get inspired by local food and drink

Delve deeper into the Local Food Britain website to find a treasure trove of seasonal recipes using local seasonal produce, and in-depth food and drink articles telling the stories behind our members and their food and drink.

You can also find out about foodie goings-on near you on our events pages – from regular markets to one-time-only pop-up restaurants, you're sure to find something unmissable.

Love your local producers

It's easy to make the switch to local when you know where to look – try swapping your chain-store coffee for a locally-roasted cup by Surrey Hills Coffee; your regular sliced white for a freshly-baked artisan loaf from Chalk Hills Bakery; stock up on hot sauce from the wonderful Fair Dinkum Fare; and raise a glass of English sparkling wine from Albury Organic Vineyard. You certainly won't regret it!

Find places to eat where local food is always on the menu

Look out for the Local Food Britain approved member badge on display at pubs, restaurants, tea shops and cafés and you'll know that they choose and serve local food and drink.
