Stay Loyal to Local series – Kingfisher Farm Shop’s ‘queue with a view’

In day four of our new campaign, ‘Stay Loyal to Local’, we head to one of the area’s best-loved independent stores, Kingfisher Farm Shop, in Abinger Hammer near Dorking in Surrey. Not only do they offer a ‘queue with a view’, overlooking their pretty pond and famous watercress beds, but they are also in the process of introducing a new veg box and hamper scheme for those who prefer home deliveries. Here, we catch up with the team to learn more about their inspiring story.

Could you start by telling us how the last few weeks have been for you?

We have had to adapt incredibly quickly to the changing circumstances. As a small team, we have made changes and pulled together. We feel incredibly lucky to have such hard-working staff and loyal customers who have been very patient with us during this time.

What positive steps have you taken to get through the lockdown?

We have employed social distancing measures in our shop and we were very sad to see our flower shop close temporarily. However, through our new food delivery service, we have developed stronger relationships with the local customers who rely on us.

Are there any innovations of which you are particularly proud?

We continue to be proud to provide fresh produce to the local area. We have been told we have a ‘queue with a view’ outside our shop, which happens to overlook our pond and watercress beds. In addition, we have a fantastic team fulfilling orders and keeping the shop up and running.

How have your customers been supporting you during this time?

Our customers continue to show support, with their kind words and patience. With every COVID update, our customers are adapting just as quickly as we are. It’s been really lovely to hear words of praise especially during these unprecedented times.

Are there any special measures you’ll be bringing in once you re-open/get back to more normality?

We have set up a new veg box and hamper scheme, launching soon, for those who are worried about going to the shops when restrictions have been lifted or simply would like a weekly delivery of fresh produce from our shop.

Why is it so important that people ‘Stay Loyal To Local’ going forward?

We believe it is always important to support your local businesses as a community. Farm shops have become a staple in some people’s lives at the moment – this is really exciting for us and we want to encourage people to shop local and seasonal in the future.

What’s the best way that our community can do that for now?

We hope our local customers will help support us as we move forward and continue to shop with us and order from our new veg box scheme.
