The Kingston Food Festival consists mainly of FREE events but there are one or two really special ones that are a little more exclusive.

This year for the first time there will be a Masterclass on Spirits run by Blackdown Artisan Spirits and hosted by Browns at their restaurant on the Riverfront on Wednesday 5th August from 7pm-8.30pm. For just £18 a head you can learn from leading experts how to make a range of really unusual cocktails from top quality ingredients. You also get to taste them and match them with accompanying canapés served up straight from the kitchen at Browns.

Another new event this year is the Ridgeview English Sparking Wine and Food Matching Masterclass on Thursday 6th August.  This event will take place at The Bishop on Riverside Walk, where Tom Surgey of Ridgeview Wine Estate in Sussex will showcase five of the company’s internationally acclaimed award-winning English sparkling wines. Each of the wines will be specifically matched with canapés from the Bishop’s kitchen. Tickets are £35 per head

The ever popular Make Your Case event is back again in the Market Place marquee from 7pm-9.30pm on Saturday. This is a fun event where local vintners, sommeliers and wine experts present their favourite wines for the audience to judge. To add to the fun they are not allowed to disclose the country of origin, the grape variety or the price. For £35 you get to taste about 10 wines and sample a variety of foods from the platters that are served as an accompaniment.

Bitter & Twisted is a similar event for beer lovers. It follows the style of Make Your Case in that presenters have three minutes to present their chosen ale and the audience scores them on taste and presentation. It will be held at The Gazebo on the waterfront on Monday 3rd August from 7pm-9.30pm and the entry fee is £22. Sharing platters will be served from The Gazebo kitchen to accompany the beverages.

The free Food Festival will run over two weekends from 1-9 August. The main event comprising The Live Food Show and the Big Kingston Market will be staged in the Town Centre throughout the second weekend (8-9 August). There will also be a Children’s Festival within the main event offering kids the opportunity to experiment with tastes and textures and even do some cooking. And there will of course be face painting courtesy of Bentalls.

In the week between the two big events there will be a Restaurant Week celebration, where the restaurants offer special deals throughout the week. Restaurants taking part include: Carluccio’s, Comptoir Libanais, Exotic Tagine, Frangos, Frank B’s Diner, Frankie & Benny’s, Las Iguanas, La Tasca, Nandos, Patisserie Valerie, Paul UK, Pizza Express, Cheeky Pea, Satori and The Swallow.

Many of the above restaurants will also take part in The Food Trail on Friday 7th August. This is a much loved event as it allows customers get to taste little samples from a whole range of different restaurants. It is the perfect way to experiment with new options.
