Ashtead, Surrey, is a thriving community on the Green Belt.

It is close to the M25 and near Leatherhead and comes under the control of Mole Valley District Council. Ashtead has a two-part conservation area which includes Ashtead House, a mansion used by schools. Ashtead has retained a clear identity and seems to have resisted the onset of the multinational – there are still lots of independent businesses in the village including cafes, bakeries and grocer’s shops. Ashtead is also home to a cookery school; Four Gables Food Academy is tucked away down Ashtead Woods Road and is run by Michelin-trained chef David Gillott, who also runs catering company Four Gables Fine Dining.
