Swanscombe is a small town north-west of Gravesend where the bones and tools of some of the earliest humans thought to have lived in England have been found. Formerly the Barnfield Pit, the site is now called the Swanscombe Heritage Park where a 400,000-year-old skull – The Swanscombe Man – is kept.

Several pubs can be found in the town offering local beers including The George & Dragon, home of the award winning Caveman Brewery, which brews its ales in the cellar beneath the main bar. Other locally brewed beers are also available as well as good, simple food.

The town became the centre of the cement making industry due to its natural abundance of chalk and clay, but is better known these days for being on the Channel Tunnel route between England and France.
