Cereal crops are derived from grasses, cultivated for their edible components. They were first domesticated about 8,000 years ago by ancient farming communities. Cereal grains are  grown in greater quantities and provide more food energy globally than any other type of food crop. In their natural form (i.e. whole grain), cereal grains are a rich source of vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, fats, oils and protein. Maize, wheat and rice accounted for 89% of all cereal production worldwide in 2012, with wheat accounting for nearly half of Britain’s arable land, producing around 17 million tonnes per year. In fact, cereal crops grow well in Britain’s climate and the UK is one of the EU’s largest cereal crops producers. UK produced cereal crops include wheat, barley, oats, rye, linseed and oil seed rape.
